Why Husband Hunters?

The initial idea for this blog was birthed from conversations with my roommates. We are seminary students (I recently graduated) and we began joking about looking for single men on campus. Of course, this is challenging when a majority of them were married at the age of twelve, but I digress. We discussed tactics – how we could spy on and eventually capture guys we would be interested in dating. We called ourselves the “Husband Hunters.” However, these silly conversations would often turn to our frustrations with being single and the unique, challenging situation it is to be single, Christian, and female. Each of us would give examples of ways in which we were not listened to. We would laugh as we retold stories of insensitive comments from well-intentioned friends and family members. “When you stop looking…” “Just focus on God.” When you hear these trite statements enough, their lack of depth truly begins to become evident. Somehow, from these conversations, I decided that a blog might be an interesting forum to speak to this situation. Also, somewhere in my sub-conscious I think if I do this blog, then God will finally bring along my husband. Neurotic, huh? It’s amazing the deep beliefs I have. Maybe you have some similar crazy ones too. =)

My desire is not for this blog to be a place to trash talk married people or the church. Rather, it is a place for single Christian females to find comfort and support through sharing and reading about our experiences. It is a place to laugh. I believe that humor can reveal truth, or the lack thereof. It is a place to be reminded that even in the darkest, most frustrating places, Jesus is with us. I’ll close this post with a prayer from David Adam from the Lindisfarne community:

O Lord,
Extend our vision,
Our clearness of sight.
Open our eyes to see
Beyond the obvious,
To perceive that this is your world.
You are in it,
You invade it,
You pervade it,
You enfold it,
It is immersed in you.
Here we encounter you,
Here we meet you,
Here you come to us,
Here your presence waits to be revealed.

O Lord,
Extend our vision,
Our clearness of sight.
Open our eyes to see
In the depth of reality,
Your grace,
Your goodness,
Your glory,
To see that we dwell in you,
That you are in us,
That you are with us always.
Here you offer us your kingdom.
